American athletics prodigy Cooper Lutkenhaus achieved a historic feat on February 15, 2026, setting a new world junior indoor 800-meter record. Competing at the Sound Running meet in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the 17-year-old Texan clocked an astonishing 1 minute 44.03 seconds.
Lutkenhaus's performance not only won the invitational event by a significant 0.70 seconds but also positioned him as the sixth-fastest athlete in the indoor 800m category historically. He eclipsed the prior under-20 world record of 1:44.35, established in January 2000 by Yuriy Borzakovskiy.
This victory follows Lutkenhaus's impressive runner-up finish at last year's American championships, earning him a spot in the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. The same meet also saw Paris Olympic champion Cole Hocker win the mile in 3:45.94, the second-fastest indoor mile ever.
