Tawny Port Skips Melbourne Cup for Canadian International
30 Sep
Summary
- Tawny Port will not compete in the Melbourne Cup due to travel concerns.
- The horse's next race is the G1 Canadian International at Woodbine.
- Tawny Port has earned over $2.8 million with seven wins in 34 starts.

Tawny Port, owned by Peachtree Stable, will not participate in the upcoming Melbourne Cup despite securing a spot through his Belmont Gold Cup victory. Trainer Miguel Clement cited travel and quarantine requirements as the primary reasons for this decision.
Instead, the 7-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile is set to compete in the G1 Canadian International at Woodbine on October 3rd. This turf marathon event is a significant focus for the horse, following his recent win in the Bowling Green Cup Invitational at Kentucky Downs.
Tawny Port has a distinguished record, with seven wins, six seconds, and five third-place finishes in 34 starts, amassing over $2.8 million in earnings. Previously trained by Brad Cox, he achieved success on dirt, including wins in the G3 Lexington Stakes and G3 Ohio Derby, and a seventh-place finish in the 2022 Kentucky Derby. He was later transferred to Christophe Clement's stable, where his focus shifted to long-distance turf races.
Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Tawny Port was acquired for $430,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The post position draw for the Canadian International is scheduled for noon Eastern on Wednesday.
