Sydney Marathon: Can Simbu Conquer Toughest Major?

This Sunday's Sydney Marathon features elite runners, including Tanzanian world champion Alphonce Simbu, aiming to set a new course record. Simbu noted that his training included preparing for the course's challenging hills. Sydney's marathon is distinguished among the Abbott World Marathon Majors for its significant cumulative elevation gain of approximately 320 meters, earning it the nickname 'Toughest Major'.

Despite its difficulty, the Sydney Marathon is set to host a record number of over 40,000 participants, with organizers expecting up to 500,000 spectators. The race director acknowledges the course's demanding nature, stating it's designed to test runners. The event attracts elite athletes like Simbu and Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir, the reigning women's world champion.

While top marathoners are currently chasing faster times in flatter races like Berlin or Chicago, Sydney offers a unique challenge that appeals to different strengths. Race organizers emphasize the event's unique appeal, highlighting the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House backdrop, and the vibrant atmosphere, making it an attractive international destination.

Notable participants include Ethiopia's Sisay Lemma with a personal best of 2:01:48 and Simbu with a PB of 2:02:47. In wheelchair races, Australian Paralympian Madison de Rozario and British racer David Weir are prominent contenders.
