Suns Aim for Top Defense with Bridges' New Role

Phoenix Suns forward Miles Bridges is set to prioritize his defensive game under head coach Jordan Ott for the 2026-27 season. Bridges stated his commitment to improving defense and rebounding, key areas for the team's strategy. General Manager Brian Gregory believes Bridges' physical and versatile defensive style aligns with the Suns' game plan of applying pressure and dominating rebounds.

The Suns, who achieved a ninth-place defensive rating last season under Ott, aim to build on this foundation. Despite a late-season dip to 15th, the team finished 45-37 and reached the playoffs. Bridges, averaging 17.1 points last season, is expected to contribute significantly on defense, where his athletic ability can create impactful plays.

Bridges' defensive rebounding numbers have seen a dip, averaging 4.9 last season compared to career highs of 6.4 in 2024-25. The Suns need him to return to previous levels to improve their rebounding, an area where they ranked second-to-last. His defensive performance will be compared to elite players like OG Anunoby and Chet Holmgren.

The addition of the 28-year-old Bridges also allows Dillon Brooks to shift to guarding smaller players, enhancing the team's overall defensive versatility. Brooks has challenged Bridges to guard multiple positions, aiming to make him a more adaptable defender capable of challenging top forwards and guards in the competitive Western Conference.
