Stone Old Alleynians Football Club is set to upgrade its facilities at Alleyne's Sports Centre, following strong community backing. The proposals include a new football pitch and a spectator stand designed to accommodate 200 seated and 200 standing individuals. This development aims to address the long-standing need for improved local facilities, as the men's first team has played outside Stone since 1999 due to inadequate infrastructure.
The existing artificial pitch has been deemed unfit for purpose. The new all-weather pitch will offer year-round usability for the club's extensive membership, which boasts over 70 teams ranging from under-fives to veterans, including special needs and disabled players. This upgrade will benefit more than 1,500 club members, alongside school and community users.
While the Stone Town Council and many residents have welcomed the plans, citing benefits to community well-being and sports provision, some local residents have expressed significant concerns. These issues primarily revolve around potential increases in traffic on Oulton Road, insufficient on-site parking, and the impact of potential nighttime lighting on nearby homes. The club also plans to incorporate an accessible viewing area and new tree planting for natural screening.
