Veteran NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith has characterized recent reports about his departure from ESPN's 'NBA Countdown' as a "non-story." Smith explained that his absence from the show is a personal choice stemming from contract negotiations conducted last year, during which he opted out of continuous studio appearances. He expressed a desire to avoid late-night commitments, clarifying that this decision was not a reflection on ESPN or his colleagues.

Smith underscored that he remains available for 'NBA Countdown' when needed, emphasizing his busy schedule with multiple other media projects. These include his daily SiriusXM Radio show, another SiriusXM program focused on political commentary, and his "Straight Shooter" podcast. He asserted that his current role is a deliberate choice aligned with his other professional obligations and personal preferences.

Looking ahead, Smith also playfully suggested he would be open to making appearances on TNT's "Inside the NBA" if the crew, featuring Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal, ever required his presence. While 'NBA Countdown' is undergoing a revamped lineup with Malika Andrews hosting, the shift is presented as a matter of Smith's personal career management rather than an involuntary removal.
