Sport Manitoba's New Leader Takes the Helm

Evan Andrew has been appointed the new president and CEO of Sport Manitoba, a non-profit organization that administers funding and leads amateur sport planning and programming. Andrew, who has worked at the organization for nearly nine years, expressed his passion for his new role.

He noted that Sport Manitoba, while generally in good shape, faces common challenges like volunteer shortages, funding issues, and a lack of sporting facilities. Andrew stated that the organization does not require a "big fix" and praised the previous leadership.

His predecessor, Janet McMahon, retired after a distinguished 40-year career. McMahon navigated the organization through the difficult COVID-19 pandemic. She highlighted Andrew's business acumen as a key asset for Sport Manitoba's future.

Andrew's top priorities include supporting provincial sport organizations, which he described as the backbone of the sporting system. He also aims to continue developing safe sport policies to prevent and address maltreatment. A new independent third-party complaint mechanism for maltreatment complaints has recently been introduced and is being closely monitored.

Sport Manitoba will also continue engaging with initiatives like the Anti-Racism in Sport Campaign and collaborate with Indigenous partners, such as the Manitoba Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Council, to further develop Indigenous coaching programs.
