Polish speed skater Kamila Sellier was seriously injured during a 1500m short track race quarterfinal. The accident happened Friday night at the Assago Ice Skating Arena. Sellier lost her footing and collided with American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold, whose skate blade cut Sellier's face.
Medical crews attended to Sellier on the ice before she was stretchered off. Polish officials confirmed she suffered a laceration to her cheek and eyelid, requiring stitches. While awaiting hospital test results, some reports suggested a possible cheekbone fracture and significant swelling.
Sellier, a medalist at European championships, remained in good spirits despite the injury. Her teammate expressed concern, while another noted Sellier's history of skate-related injuries. Santos-Griswold was disqualified from the race following the incident.
