Law enforcement officers recently carried the Flame of Hope through Los Angeles, marking a significant leg of the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games Torch Run. This event culminated at the LA Memorial Coliseum, signifying the start of the Los Angeles County portion of the run.
The Final Leg of the torch run is currently underway, with separate routes on the West and East Coasts leading up to the opening ceremony in Minnesota on June 20. More than 3,000 law enforcement personnel are involved, engaging with over 200 communities across Southern California.
Special Olympics Southern California President and CEO Kelly Pond highlighted the importance of partnerships, particularly with law enforcement, in supporting the athletes. The funds raised are crucial for providing free, year-round sports training and athletic competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, relying on volunteer coaches.
The torch began its journey across the Inland Empire and Los Angeles County earlier this week, with local departments continuing the relay. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell expressed gratitude to the athletes for their inspiring determination and courage, emphasizing a focus on ability. The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games are scheduled to take place from June 20 to June 26 in Minnesota's Twin Cities.
