Sox Pitchers Battle Fatigue: Can They Hang On?
26 Aug
Summary
- Sean Burke felt physically drained but is now improving.
- Starters' innings pitched ranks last in MLB.
- Bullpen faces heavy workload due to starter performance.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Sean Burke has reported overcoming a recent period of physical fatigue, describing a 'dead-arm feeling' that has since been addressed with training staff adjustments. Burke stated he felt 'really good again' in his last outing and is expected to start Wednesday's series finale against the Texas Rangers. His recovery and that of other starters are crucial as the team currently leads the American League Central by 2 1/2 games over the Cleveland Guardians.
Manager Will Venable acknowledged the fluctuating stability of the pitching staff, noting that the team's primary objective is to secure wins daily, irrespective of pitching uncertainties. However, the Sox's starters have pitched the fewest innings in the majors, partly due to opener strategies, placing considerable demands on the bullpen.
Recent performances have highlighted these challenges, with starters José Urquidy and Luis Castillo struggling to complete four innings in their latest outings. Castillo, acquired on August 1st, has a 5.89 ERA in four starts, though he had a strong performance on August 12th. Anthony Kay has been a bright spot, posting a 2.66 ERA in his last four starts.
While veteran pitchers like Urquidy and Fedde have provided bulk innings in relief roles, the team also faces challenges with starter Davis Martin on the injured list due to a blister. Relief pitcher Huáscar Brazobán was placed on the 15-day IL with a lat strain, with Jonathan Cannon recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. Outfielder Andrew Benintendi was placed on the bereavement list.
