Green Bay Southwest senior Luke Peterson achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for the WIAA Division 1 state cross-country championship on October 31 at Ridges Golf Course. Peterson's participation marked the first time a Southwest runner competed at the state level since 2015, ending a long drought for the program. Despite finishing 133rd with a time of 17 minutes, 29.5 seconds, and facing a mid-race obstacle, his presence at the event was celebrated as a major victory.
Peterson's journey to state involved dedicated summer training and a shift in mentality, as noted by coach Ben Kubicki and former coach Justin Short. His success serves as an inspiration, highlighting the potential for growth within the Southwest team. Other local runners also made their mark at the state meet.
Luxemburg-Casco's Ezra Treml delivered the best performance among local runners, securing seventh place in Division 2 with a time of 15:51.3. Green Bay Notre Dame's boys team finished a strong fourth in Division 2, while the girls team achieved third place, the highest team finish for any local school. Green Bay Preble sophomore Georgia Koss recorded a personal-best time of 18:32.6, placing 14th in Division 1.
