- Cunningham missed part of 2025 season with a torn MCL.

Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever spoke about the impending retirement of Diana Taurasi's No. 3 jersey by the Phoenix Mercury. Cunningham, who played with the legendary guard for six seasons in Phoenix, described Taurasi as "the ultimate pro" and "gold down to the core." She credited Taurasi for her mentorship. The ceremony is scheduled for August 16, 2026.
Cunningham herself is experiencing a strong 2026 season, averaging 9.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists through 21 games. This follows a season-ending torn right MCL injury sustained in August 2025, which limited her to 30 games in her first year with the Fever.
When asked about attending the jersey retirement, Cunningham humorously suggested she might be playing but would attend if her mother wished. Taurasi, who retired after the 2024 season, concluded a storied career as the WNBA's all-time leading scorer, a three-time champion, and a multi-time MVP.
