The F57 shot put discipline, which requires athletes to generate power solely through their upper body and torso while seated, debuted at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Soman Rana, born in 1983 in Gaya, Bihar, joined the Indian Army in 2001. His life took a dramatic turn on December 1, 2006, when a mine blast on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir resulted in a below-knee amputation.
Despite the life-altering injury, Rana found motivation in para sports during his rehabilitation at the Artificial Limb Centre in Pune. He joined the Army Paralympic Node in 2017, showcasing remarkable progress. A two-time Paralympian, Rana had previously won a silver medal at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships and was a strong medal contender for the CWG 2026.
