Soccer Star Sues Over Cardiac Arrest
17 Sep
Summary
- Midfielder Savannah DeMelo is suing a hospital and two doctors.
- She alleges negligence led to her cardiac arrest in September 2025.
- DeMelo seeks damages for injuries and lost earnings.
Racing Louisville and USWNT midfielder Savannah DeMelo has filed a lawsuit against University of Louisville Health (UofL Health) and two physicians, Dr. Sarabjeet Suri and Dr. Jennifer Daily. The legal action, filed in Jefferson Circuit Court in Kentucky, alleges that medical negligence led to DeMelo suffering cardiac arrest on the field in September 2025.
DeMelo experienced a collapse during a game in September 2025, an event later revealed to be caused by an undiagnosed cardiac arrhythmia. The lawsuit asserts that Dr. Daily, who served as Racing Louisville's chief medical officer, and Dr. Suri failed to diagnose this condition despite DeMelo reporting symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath in March 2025.
The midfielder had previously experienced a medical scare in March 2025, where she left a game early due to dizziness, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing. While that incident was initially attributed to issues with medication for Graves' disease and hyperthyroidism, no direct link to the subsequent cardiac arrest has been confirmed.
DeMelo's suit claims that the alleged failure to identify her abnormal heart rhythm resulted not only in the cardiac arrest but also in significant financial losses due to missed playing and earning opportunities during her recovery period.
