Summary
- Shreyas Iyer has excelled in ODIs and IPL, but Aakash Chopra says his Test debut is not imminent
- Several other batters, including Sarfaraz Khan, are ahead of Iyer in the queue for Test selection
- Iyer has had a strong domestic and IPL season, but Chopra believes he must wait his turn

Former India cricketer and reputed pundit Aakash Chopra has dismissed the possibility of Shreyas Iyer being considered for India's Test team in the near future. Iyer has firmly established himself as an automatic selection for the national ODI team, even emerging as their highest run-scorer during the victorious Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. Additionally, the 30-year-old enjoyed a productive domestic season and a successful IPL 2025, leading Punjab Kings to the final.
However, Chopra believes that Iyer's time has not yet come for Test cricket. The analyst stated that there are several other batters, such as Sarfaraz Khan, who are currently ahead of Iyer in the pecking order for Test selection. Sarfaraz has impressed with his performances for India A in England, including a century in a practice match against the England Lions, where pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was also in the bowling attack.
Chopra further emphasized that even players like Karun Nair and Dhruv Jurel are waiting in the wings for their opportunities in the Test team, suggesting that Iyer will have to bide his time before earning his maiden Test cap. The former cricketer acknowledged Iyer's strong domestic and IPL form, but maintained that the right-hander will have to wait a little longer for his chance in the traditional format of the game.
