Shark Chase: Foil Surfer's Close Call Off California Coast
1 May
Summary
- A great white shark pursued a foil surfer for approximately five minutes.
- The shark's pursuit was captured on video and has since gone viral.
- Surfers theorize the shark may have been curious, mistaking their board's foil for prey.

Two surfers recently experienced a prolonged and dramatic encounter with a large shark near Santa Barbara, California. Ron Takeda was foil boarding a few miles offshore when a massive shark began trailing him closely for about five minutes. Takeda's friend, Tavis Boise, who was filming the excursion, captured the harrowing chase on video.
The footage, which has since gained significant attention online, shows the shark finning just above the water as it followed Takeda. Both surfers, experienced with marine life, noted that this was an unusual chase lasting longer than any prior shark encounters they had experienced. They estimate the shark to be as long as 13 feet.
Upon sharing the video with experts, it was confirmed to be a shark, likely a great white. Takeda and Boise speculate that the shark's aggressive interest may have been triggered by the foil on Takeda's board, which resembles a stingray from below. They believe the shark was acting out of curiosity rather than aggression, as it never made contact.
Despite the frightening nature of the event, the surfers expressed awe rather than discouragement. Boise even titled his video "Friendly Shark Chase" to avoid demonizing the animal. They plan to continue their surfing activities, feeling better prepared should a similar situation arise.
