Senegal faces disciplinary action from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following their walk-off during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco. The team, led by coach Pape Thiaw, protested a penalty awarded to the hosts in the eighth minute of stoppage time. This incident occurred shortly after Senegal had a goal disallowed. The match was delayed for 16 minutes before play resumed.
Despite the controversy, Senegal secured victory in extra time with a stunning goal from Pape Gueye. However, the protest has drawn widespread condemnation. CAF stated it "strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour," vowing to take action against those found guilty. FIFA president Gianni Infantino also denounced the "unacceptable scenes" and the act of leaving the field.
Coach Thiaw later apologized for the decision, admitting it was a reaction in the heat of the moment. Morocco's coach, Walid Regragui, expressed disappointment, stating the image presented of Africa was "shameful." Sadio Mané, a key player, also indicated his reluctance to abandon the game, emphasizing the positive evolution of African football.
