Sean Magarian, a 24-year-old local golfer, has once again triumphed at the Worcester County Amateur, securing his third career title. This victory also marks his second consecutive win in the prestigious tournament. Magarian, a graduate of West Boylston High, clinched the championship in a sudden-death playoff against fellow left-handed golfer Shawn Amari.
The two-day, 36-hole tournament, which featured nearly 100 players, saw Magarian enter the final round with a two-stroke lead after an impressive 6-under par 66 on Saturday at Kettle Brook Golf Club. The final round at Wachusett Country Club in West Boylston was a close contest, with Amari, a 19-year-old University of Hartford student, mounting a strong challenge.
Amari briefly took the lead on Sunday, but a par on the 18th hole by Magarian forced a playoff. The sudden-death round continued over several holes, with both players demonstrating skill under pressure. Ultimately, Magarian secured the win with a par on the third playoff hole.
Magarian, a member of Pleasant Valley Country Club, expressed his pride in winning the tournament for the third time, especially as a local competitor. He joins an elite group of three-time winners, following Owen Quinn's consecutive victories from 2019 to 2021. Amari, competing in the event for the first time, acknowledged the challenging putt that led to his bogey in the playoff but expressed satisfaction with his performance and the opportunity to compete.
