Sauce Gardner Sued Over Detroit Renovation Project

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner is facing a significant legal challenge stemming from a real estate investment in Detroit. Gardner filed a lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court alleging fraud and breach of contract against contractor Nicholas Sanborn and Sanborn Construction Group. The dispute centers on the renovation of a 102-year-old apartment building purchased by Gardner for about $935,000.

Gardner claims he paid $500,000 for the first phase of renovations, which included work on windows, roofing, doors, and framing. However, the lawsuit asserts that the project failed to progress as promised, leading Gardner to halt the work and request his money back. Despite this, he alleges further spending occurred, escalating the financial disagreement.

Adding to the controversy, Gardner claims his name and image were used without permission in a YouTube video promoting the project. He accuses Sanborn of fraud, negligent misrepresentation, and unjust enrichment. The total claim amounts to approximately $1.4 million, covering the renovation payment and additional damages.

The legal battle gains prominence as the Colts enter the 2026 season with high expectations, and Gardner remains a key player. Acquired by the Colts in November 2025, he has become a vital part of the team's secondary, making this courtroom focus a notable shift from his on-field performance. Neither Sanborn nor Sanborn Construction Group had publicly responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
