Spanish Coach Takes Helm of Czechia National Team

Spanish coach Santi Denia officially assumed leadership of the Czechia national football team on Friday, July 31, 2026, becoming the first foreigner to hold the position. The 52-year-old secured a two-year contract with the Czech Football Association, which includes an option for a further two-year extension.

David Trunda, head of the Czech FA, introduced Denia in Prague, expressing confidence in his extensive international experience. Denia, a former Atletico Madrid defender, conveyed his enthusiasm and honor in leading the Czech national team, acknowledging its rich football history.

This transition follows the resignation of Miroslav Koubek, who stepped down after the Czechs' early exit from the World Cup. Koubek took responsibility for the team's losses to South Korea and Mexico, and a draw with South Africa, which resulted in a last-place finish in Group A with one point.

Denia's coaching accolades include leading Spain to Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Games and clinching European titles with Spain's under-17 and under-19 teams in 2017 and 2019, respectively. Most recently, he managed Al-Shahania in Qatar.

The new coach faces immediate challenges in the Nations League. The Czechia team will open its League A campaign by hosting Croatia on September 26. Their group also includes formidable opponents England and World Cup champions Spain.
