Santa Margarita, led by coach Carson Palmer, secured a critical 14-7 victory against Mater Dei in their Trinity League opener on Friday, extending their winning streak to 12 games. The Eagles' defense proved formidable, recording seven sacks and a crucial late interception by freshman Jayden Jack to seal the win with just 12 seconds remaining. This marks the second consecutive year Santa Margarita has defeated Mater Dei under Palmer.
The Eagles, ranked highly both locally and nationally, took a 14-7 lead in the third quarter following a touchdown pass from Fletch Palmer. Mater Dei's defense made efforts to respond, but Santa Margarita's defense consistently shut down their advances, including a missed field goal and a turnover on downs. Despite Mater Dei's offensive drives, including a late scramble and pass, they were unable to find the end zone.
Both quarterbacks, Fletch Palmer and Mater Dei's Paytyn Guess, passed for over 150 yards. The game was a physical contest, with Santa Margarita's defense also noted for strong performances from linemen and defensive backs. The Eagles aim to continue their championship aspirations this season.
