Summary
- Greater Manchester mayor seeks Ryder Cup for Bolton's Hulton Park.
- A £250 million golf course is planned but not yet built.
- The decision on hosting is expected around 2029.

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has announced a bid to host the Ryder Cup at Hulton Park in Bolton. This would mark the first time the prestigious golf tournament comes to the north of England in nearly 60 years. The plan involves building a new £250 million golf course on the historic Hulton Park estate, which formerly belonged to an aristocratic family that inspired Downton Abbey.
Previous proposals for the Hulton Park development faced opposition from residents and conservationists in 2018 over concerns about losing Grade II-listed land. Council leaders have stated that the Peel Group development will only proceed if the Ryder Cup bid is successful. This decision is not expected until approximately 2029. The UK government's approval would also be necessary for any bid.
Bolton is expected to face competition from other potential venues, including The Belfry in Warwickshire, the London Golf Club in Kent, and Luton Hoo. The Ryder Cup, a biennial tournament featuring Europe's top male golfers against those from the US, last visited the north of England in 1977. Burnham envisions the 2035 event as the "biggest ever" Ryder Cup, projecting 350,000 fans and a lasting regional legacy. He highlighted Manchester's success in hosting the Brit Awards as evidence of the region's capability to deliver major international events. Significant investment, up to £70 million, is being committed to transport infrastructure to support spectators and benefit local communities.
