Pirates Land O'Hearn: A $29M Comeback Story

The Pittsburgh Pirates have secured a significant offensive upgrade, agreeing to a two-year contract worth $29 million with free-agent Ryan O'Hearn. This move follows their earlier acquisition of Brandon Lowe, further strengthening the team's lineup. O'Hearn, now 32, enjoyed a career-defining season in 2025, delivering personal bests in home runs (17) and RBIs (63) while posting a .281 batting average. His performance earned him his first All-Star selection with the Baltimore Orioles.

O'Hearn's success with the Orioles attracted the attention of the San Diego Padres, who acquired him mid-season in 2025 as part of a deal involving multiple prospects. Despite a slight dip in his production in San Diego compared to his first-half performance, the season solidified his status as a valuable asset. This resurgence is particularly notable given that in December 2022, O'Hearn was designated for assignment by the Kansas City Royals.

His tenure with the Royals, spanning parts of five seasons after being drafted in 2014, yielded a modest .234/.291/.415 slash line with 38 home runs. Acquired by the Orioles for cash considerations shortly after his release from Kansas City, O'Hearn was initially assigned to Triple-A. Now, after three consecutive seasons as an effective left-handed hitter with strong wRC+ marks against both right- and left-handed pitching, O'Hearn offers the Pirates versatility as a designated hitter, first baseman, or corner outfielder.
