Ryan Clark: Wife Saved My Life After Sickle Cell Crisis

Ryan Clark, known for his NFL career and ESPN broadcasting, recently shared a harrowing personal experience on Daniel Cormier's podcast. He detailed a life-threatening medical crisis stemming from his sickle cell trait. During a 2007 game in Denver, Clark suffered extreme pain, leading to a diagnosis of spleen complication aggravated by high altitude. This ordeal resulted in the removal of his spleen and gallbladder, and a permanent ban from playing in Denver.

Clark expressed profound gratitude to his wife, Yonka, for her immense support during his recovery, stating he would not be alive without her. He recalled nights with fevers over 103 degrees and her constant care. The couple, who met in college at Louisiana State University, married in July 2004 and have three children. Yonka has been a stabilizing force in their family life.

Driven by his experience, Clark established Ryan Clark's Cure League in 2012. This foundation aims to raise awareness for sickle cell anemia, support patient care, and fund critical medical research for a cure, partnering with major institutions in Pittsburgh.
