Summary
- Piastri beats teammate Norris by 0.012 seconds for pole
- Verstappen qualifies third, 0.265 seconds behind Piastri
- Stroll crashes out in Q1, unable to set a time
On August 30th, 2025, rookie driver Oscar Piastri pulled off a remarkable upset, clinching pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix. The McLaren driver set a new track record of 1:08.662 in Q3, edging out his teammate Lando Norris by a mere 0.012 seconds.
Heading into the weekend, Norris had been the dominant force, leading all three practice sessions. However, Piastri found an extra gear when it mattered most, delivering a stunning performance to claim his first-ever pole position in Formula 1.
The battle at the front was not the only talking point, as reigning world champion Max Verstappen could only manage third place, 0.265 seconds adrift of Piastri's pace-setting lap. The home favorite will be hoping to make up ground in the race, but he faces a significant challenge to catch the McLarens.

Elsewhere, it was a disastrous qualifying session for Aston Martin. Lance Stroll crashed out in Q1, unable to set a lap time after his car was damaged in a practice session incident. The team will now face a race against time to repair the car and get Stroll back on the grid for Sunday's race.
