Mendieta: Rodri unlikely for Real Madrid

Real Madrid is reportedly prioritizing the acquisition of a holding midfielder for the upcoming summer transfer window, a position left vacant following Toni Kroos's retirement. Among the numerous players linked with the club, Rodri of Manchester City has been identified as a long-term target.

Rodri, who has been content at Manchester City, has only one year remaining on his contract as the summer approaches, sparking speculation about a potential move to the Spanish capital. Reports have even suggested Real Madrid might consider a player-plus-cash deal involving Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrygo.

However, Spanish football pundit Gaizka Mendieta has voiced skepticism regarding Rodri's potential transfer to Real Madrid. In an interview, Mendieta suggested that Rodri might prefer to remain in the Premier League, possibly due to his strong connections with Manchester City fans and the club, or perhaps due to past affiliations with Atletico Madrid or an incident involving the Ballon d'Or in 2024.

While Rodri remains a key target, Real Madrid is also exploring other options, including AZ Alkmaar's Kees Smit. The club is determined to sign a player with similar attributes to Rodri, if not the Spaniard himself.
