20 Oct
Summary
- Rodri is benched for Barcelona's Champions League match against PSG.
- The decision prioritizes Rodri's fitness for the upcoming El Clásico.
- Barcelona has won all 11 matches this season prior to this fixture.
Barcelona's manager, Hansi Flick, has made a significant lineup change for their Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain, benching key midfielder Rodri. This decision is primarily driven by the need to manage player workload, especially with a critical El Clásico match against Real Madrid scheduled for the upcoming weekend.
Rodri, who has been a consistent performer for Barcelona, has logged heavy minutes this season and recently recovered from minor muscular fatigue. Flick is taking a cautious approach to prevent any further injury concerns, ensuring Rodri is available for the league-defining clash against Real Madrid. Barcelona has enjoyed a flawless start to the 2026-27 season, winning all eleven matches before facing PSG.
The absence of Rodri for the PSG match highlights Barcelona's challenging fixture congestion. Despite this, Flick's focus appears to be on securing a potential nine-point lead over Real Madrid in the league standings should they win the El Clásico, solidifying their title race position.
