From Fewest to Most: Rockies' Injury Turnaround Stuns MLB

The Colorado Rockies' injury situation has dramatically reversed, moving from being among the MLB organizations with the fewest days lost to the Injured List (IL) to a current league-leading status. In previous years, the team managed remarkably low IL figures despite significant injuries, ranking seventh fewest in total days lost since 2024.

However, this trend has sharply reversed in 2025 and continues into 2026. The Rockies recorded 26 major league injured list stints in 2025. As of early June 2026, they have already accumulated 22 such stints and are tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the league lead with 14 players on the IL. This organizational injury spike is profound, with 54 out of 285 players currently on the injured list, nearly one-fifth of the entire player population.

The reasons behind this surge are unclear, with speculation pointing to potential process changes following front office turnover. While random chance plays a role in individual injuries, the widespread nature of the current situation raises questions about underlying causes, impacting the team's present and future outlook.

Historically, a high number of IL days has not always correlated with poor performance; several teams with the most IL days have made the playoffs. Conversely, teams with the fewest IL days, like the Rockies in the past, have often struggled. This complex relationship suggests that simply accumulating injuries does not guarantee success, and the Rockies' current predicament warrants careful monitoring.
