Retired Boxing Champ Gennady Golovkin Eyeing Comeback for World Boxing Presidency

As of November 17th, 2025, Gennady Golovkin, the former two-time middleweight unified champion, is making a bid for the presidency of World Boxing, the governing body for amateur boxing. Golovkin, who last fought in 2022 when he was defeated for the second time by Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, has never officially announced his retirement from the sport.

In a recent interview, the 43-year-old Kazakh fighter revealed that if his candidacy for the World Boxing presidency is successful, he will likely announce his retirement from professional boxing. However, he also left the door open for a possible comeback, stating that "the option of fighting again is not out of the question" as he maintains an athletic lifestyle and keeps himself in shape.

Golovkin has served as the leader of World Boxing's Olympic commission since last year and is now competing against Greek administrator Mariolis Charilaos for the presidency position. The election is scheduled to take place in Rome on November 23rd, 2025.

The future of boxing at the Olympics is uncertain, and Golovkin is determined to safeguard the sport's place in the Games. He believes that the current situation in Olympic boxing is "unacceptable" and feels a "tremendous desire to help" as there is a "real threat that it will not be included in the Olympics after LA28."
