6 May
Summary
- Reggie Gilliam feels his offensive talent was underutilized by the Bills.
- He signed with the Patriots seeking a more versatile offensive role.
- Gilliam aims to prove his receiving abilities, inspired by James Develin.
New England Patriots fullback Reggie Gilliam expressed his belief that his offensive talents were underutilized during his previous NFL tenure. After six seasons primarily contributing on special teams for the Buffalo Bills, Gilliam signed with the Patriots in March, seeking an opportunity to expand his role. He feels that New England's history of effectively utilizing fullbacks can help unlock his potential.
Gilliam stated that many are unaware of his capabilities with the ball in hand due to limited opportunities. He aims to dispel notions that he cannot be a versatile receiver, having only caught 16 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns since 2020. He is learning the entire offense, not just the fullback position, under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
He referenced former Patriot James Develin, a player who also proved effective as a receiver. Gilliam believes he is more agile than Develin and capable of similar receiving feats, emphasizing that his new team values the fullback position for more than just blocking.
