Red Sox Prospect Witherspoon Rebounds to Top 100 List

Kyson Witherspoon, a 2025 first-round pick for the Boston Red Sox, has re-entered Baseball America's top 100 prospects list at No. 94. After a difficult start to the season with High-A Greenville, where he posted a 7.18 ERA in his first seven starts, Witherspoon has turned his performance around.

Over his last six starts, spanning 30.2 innings, Witherspoon has achieved a 2.64 ERA and struck out 10.4 batters per nine innings. This resurgence included arguably his best start of the season on Friday, where he allowed only one run over a career-high six innings. Red Sox Senior Director of Player Development Brian Abraham attributed this turnaround to Witherspoon finding comfort in his professional routine and a better balance between competing and improving.

Despite his recent success, Witherspoon still faces challenges with walks and home runs, holding the 14th-highest walk rate and a notable home run rate in the South Atlantic League. However, his strikeout rate remains impressive, ranking 12th in the league. The Red Sox selected Witherspoon 15th overall in the 2025 MLB Draft from the University of Oklahoma for $5 million and he is now ranked as the No. 3 prospect in their system, with an overall record of 2-3 and a 4.74 ERA in 13 starts for Greenville.

Other Red Sox prospects on Baseball America's top 100 list include shortstop Franklin Arias at No. 3 and pitcher Anthony Eyanson at No. 33, both of whom will participate in the Futures Game. Outfielder Justin Gonzales was notably absent from the July update after struggling in June. Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox lost to the Washington Nationals 10-2, concluding a three-game series, and are set to begin a nine-game road trip before the All-Star break.
