Gonzalez Injured, Monasterio Eyes Red Sox Role
7 Mar
Summary
- Romy González is sidelined with a shoulder injury.
- Andruw Monasterio is impressing and could replace González.
- Monasterio can play multiple infield positions effectively.

The Boston Red Sox infield is currently not at full strength due to Romy González's shoulder injury. González himself indicated in February that he would likely not be ready for Opening Day, feeling the ramp-up would be too quick. His shoulder is scheduled for reevaluation soon, but he is still expected to begin the year on the injured list. This situation creates a clear opening for infielder Andruw Monasterio, a recent acquisition from the Milwaukee Brewers.
Monasterio is generating considerable buzz in camp, with manager Alex Cora referencing him multiple times as a potential replacement for González. While González posted a strong .978 OPS against left-handed pitching last year, Monasterio also held his own with an .837 OPS against southpaws in limited plate appearances for the Brewers. Crucially, Monasterio offers positional flexibility, having logged innings at first base, third base, and shortstop this spring. He is also hitting well in limited action, batting .308 with a double and a home run through six games.
