Red Bull's F1 Engine Edge Lost in Electric Blind Spot

Red Bull finds itself uniquely disadvantaged under the 2026 Formula 1 power unit regulations. Classified as the benchmark by the FIA's ADUO system in two assessment periods, the team is ineligible for any engine upgrades. This classification stems from the ADUO system's focus solely on the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) performance index, neglecting the increasingly vital electric energy deployment. The 2026 power units feature a near equal split between ICE and electric power, making the ADUO system's blind spot a significant competitive hurdle.

The ADUO system, based on torque, engine speed, and MGU-K output, does not measure the Energy Recovery System (ERS). While the FIA admits this index isn't fully representative of total power unit performance, they opted for a simpler regulatory framework. This is particularly painful for Red Bull, as manufacturers can modify broader aspects of the power unit, including ERS, turbochargers, and cooling systems. Despite Red Bull's deficiencies on the electric side, the ADUO rules prevent them from making any such improvements.

The Italian Grand Prix highlighted this issue, as circuits with long acceleration zones, like Monza, exacerbate the problem of electrical energy management. Cars deplete their battery assistance before corner entry, directly impacting lap times. Max Verstappen has expressed surprise and concern, noting that rivals are bringing engine upgrades while Red Bull is still in talks with the FIA. The current ADUO evaluation runs through round 18, with consequences carrying over into the 2027 season, potentially shaping Red Bull's competitive standing for an extended period.
