Rangers' Top Prospect Walcott Faces Long Road to Recovery After UCL Tear
13 Feb
Summary
- Top prospect Sebastian Walcott will miss most of 2026 season.
- Injury requires surgery to repair a torn right UCL.
- Walcott's return timeline is shorter as a position player.

Texas Rangers' top prospect, Sebastian Walcott, faces a significant setback as he is expected to miss the majority, if not all, of the 2026 season. The 19-year-old shortstop recently suffered a tear in his right UCL. He is scheduled for surgery in the coming days to repair the injury.
As a position player, Walcott's recovery timeline from Tommy John surgery is generally shorter than that of a pitcher. While pitchers typically require 12-18 months to recover, position players can often return to hitting or DHing duties between nine to ten months post-surgery. Walcott, who was the youngest player in the Double-A Texas League for much of the 2025 season, spent the entire year in Double-A.
Despite some struggles at the plate in 2025, hitting .255 with 13 home runs, Walcott demonstrated considerable power potential with a top exit velocity of 115 mph. He signed with the Rangers in January 2023 for a $3.2 million bonus and has consistently competed against older players. The injury may accelerate discussions about a potential position change from shortstop to third base or the outfield due to his 6-foot-4 frame.
Even with this injury, Walcott is still projected to be an above-average hitter and a potential All-Star. However, the missed season is a blow to a Rangers farm system that has seen several top prospects traded away recently to bolster the major league team.
