Raiders Offense Explodes in Upset Win Over Patriots

In their Week 1 matchup on September 10, 2025, the Las Vegas Raiders came out firing against the New England Patriots. On their very first play from scrimmage, Raiders quarterback Geno Smith connected with tight end Brock Bowers for a 23-yard gain. Just five plays later, Smith found wide receiver Tre Tucker for a 26-yard touchdown, giving the Raiders an early lead.

The Raiders' ability to make big plays continued to be a thorn in the Patriots' side throughout the game. By the final whistle, the Patriots' defense had surrendered nine plays of 20 or more yards, while their own offense managed only three such plays. This disparity in explosive plays ultimately contributed to the Raiders' 20-13 victory over the Patriots.

Bowers, who was a focal point for the Patriots' defense, proved to be a difference-maker, hauling in three of those explosive plays and finishing the game with 103 receiving yards. Despite the Patriots' efforts to contain him, the second-year tight end proved too much to handle.

As the Patriots head to Miami for Week 2, the focus will be on how to limit the number of big plays allowed. Safety Jaylinn Hawkins acknowledged the team's shortcomings, saying, "We gave up too many explosives. That was the biggest thing, eliminating the X-plays." With room for improvement, the Patriots will look to bounce back and shore up their defensive lapses.
