Raducanu Carries British Hopes Alone at Aus Open
20 Jan
Summary
- Katie Boulter lost to Belinda Bencic, exiting the Australian Open.
- Sonay Kartal also suffered a first-round defeat, marking a poor start.
- Emma Raducanu remains the sole British singles player advancing.

Emma Raducanu will represent Great Britain alone in the second round of the Australian Open women's singles. This follows Katie Boulter's first-round exit, where she was defeated by the in-form Belinda Bencic with a score of 6-0, 7-5.
Sonay Kartal, the British number two, also experienced a first-round loss. She conceded that her performance against Anna Kalinskaya was one of her worst in years. Kartal, ranked 66th, lost to the 31st seed 7-6 (3), 6-1.
Boulter, currently ranked 113th, faced a challenging draw against Bencic, who has recently re-entered the top 10. Despite a rally in the second set, Boulter could not overcome the seeded opponent. Kartal expressed significant disappointment with her own level of play during her match.
Raducanu is set to face Anastasia Potapova in the second round. Boulter had been working with a new coach and preparing for her wedding to Alex De Minaur, who was present in her player box.
