- His goal was the fastest in a World Cup opener since 2006.
- Quinones recently became soccer's most expensive Mexican club sale.

Mexico's Julian Quinones scored the opening goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against South Africa on Thursday, June 11. The goal, netted in the ninth minute, marked the fastest opening goal in a FIFA World Cup since Philipp Lahm's strike in 2006.
An unexpected defensive miscue by South Africa's Sphephelo 'Yaya' Sithole led to the opportunity. Following a wayward pass from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Erik Lira pressed Sithole, dispossessing him. The loose ball fell to Quinones, who swiftly capitalized, firing a low shot past Williams into the net.
Quinones, originally from Colombia, has had a notable career in Mexican football, winning multiple league titles with Atlas and Club America. He completed his naturalization process to represent Mexico in October 2023.
His recent transfer to Saudi club Al-Qadsiah for a reported $16 million made him the most expensive player sold by a Mexican club in June 2024. He has since excelled in the Saudi Pro League, winning the Golden Boot in the 2025-26 season.
