QB Mateer Embraces OU's Elite Defense for Growth

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has rigorously focused on enhancing his footwork and throwing mechanics throughout the offseason. He is anticipating a significantly improved performance in the upcoming 2026 season, attributing much of this potential growth to the challenging reps he receives against the Sooners' formidable defense.

The Oklahoma defense, under head coach Brent Venables, has transformed into one of the SEC's elite units. In 2025, the Sooners led the conference in total defense, allowing just 272.5 yards per game, and in scoring defense, conceding only 15.8 points per game. This defensive strength is expected to continue in 2026 with the return of key players like Eli Bowen and David Stone.

Mateer acknowledges the difficulty of facing such a skilled defense, which regularly employs varied schemes to test the offense. However, he believes this intense practice environment is essential for preparing the offense for any challenge they might face from opponents. The offense itself has been bolstered by new receiver and tight end additions, alongside Mateer's full health after playing with a thumb injury in the latter half of the 2025 season.
