Braden Smith was instrumental with 14 points, 11 assists, and three steals, showcasing a remarkable turnaround for the Boilermakers (27-8) after a challenging stretch in their regular season.
Purdue's victory marks their third Big Ten Tournament title in program history. The team, which also received a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament, will face Queens in the first round of the West Region. Michigan (31-3), the top-seeded team, saw Yaxel Lendeborg score 20 points and Aday Mara add 17 in the championship game. Despite the loss, the Wolverines were awarded a No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region for the NCAA Tournament, where they will play their opening game on Thursday.
Key plays in the second half included back-to-back jumpers from Kaufman-Renn off Smith's passes, extending Purdue's lead. Smith's aggressive play drew fouls and garnered significant cheers from the Purdue supporters at the United Center. The Boilermakers shot an efficient 15 for 26 from the field in the second half, demonstrating their dominance. Michigan coach Dusty May acknowledged Purdue's strong performance, stating, "They earned it." The Wolverines, who won the Big Ten tourney in 2025, will aim to advance in the NCAA Tournament.
In the first half, Purdue established a 38-34 lead following a 12-2 run. However, Michigan managed to tie the game late in the period with an alley-oop dunk and a subsequent layup. Purdue has consistently been a top-four seed in the NCAA Tournament over the last nine appearances, while this marks Michigan's fourth time receiving a No. 1 seed. The Wolverines have the potential to return to the United Center for the Sweet Sixteen if they secure two more wins.
