Purdue Earns Historic No. 1 Ranking in Men's Basketball Preseason Poll

On October 13, 2025, Purdue University's men's basketball team was ranked No. 1 in the newly-released AP Top 25 preseason poll. This marks the first time in the program's history that the Boilermakers have held the top spot in the preseason rankings.
Purdue, which returns All-American guard Braden Smith and All-Big Ten forward Trey Kaufman-Renn from a team that won 24 games last season, earned 35 of a possible 61 first-place votes. The Boilermakers have now ranked No. 1 in the AP poll five times in the last five calendar years, with their last stint at the top coming in January 2024 before they went on to finish as the national runner-up.
This unprecedented success has come during one of the most successful periods in Purdue's basketball history, with the team's 134 wins over the last five seasons tied for the fourth-most among all college basketball programs. The Boilermakers, led by coach Matt Painter, first reached the No. 1 ranking in December 2021.
