Puerto Rico's Lone Olympian Defies Odds in Winter Sports

Puerto Rico's presence at the Winter Games is embodied by Kellie Delka, its only athlete. Delka, who stands 5-foot-3 and weighs 120 pounds, competes in skeleton, a sport involving speeds of approximately 80 mph down an icy track.

Her participation signifies a commitment to rebuilding Puerto Rico's Winter Olympics program. The program had been effectively dismantled in 2002 after a bobsled team withdrawal, leading to a 16-year hiatus for the island's winter athletes.

Delka, originally from Texas, relocated to Puerto Rico in 2018 to meet residency requirements for representing the island. She is an alumna of the University of North Texas and was introduced to skeleton by fellow alum Johnny Quinn.

She made her Olympic debut in Beijing, carrying Puerto Rico's flag, and then carried it solo in Italy. Delka financially supports her passion through her bikini designs, showcasing a dedication that extends beyond the sport itself.

Delka expresses a strong desire to mentor younger aspiring athletes, encouraging them to pursue their Olympic dreams regardless of limited resources. She hopes to inspire others to join and expand Puerto Rico's winter sports representation.
