The injury occurred on October 17, 2015, in Fairfax, Virginia. Colon complained of illegal punches to the back of his head during the bout. After the ninth round, he was disqualified when his corner removed him from the fight.
Following the disqualification, Colon became unwell in the dressing room, collapsed, and was found to have a significant brain bleed. He underwent emergency surgery to reduce pressure and remove the blood clot.
Colon spent 221 days in a coma. After being released from the hospital in 2016, he required continuous care and was unable to walk or speak normally for the remainder of his life.
