Premier League Referee Errors Surge: VAR Under Scrutiny
26 Mar
Summary
- Refereeing mistakes have risen across most categories this season.
- VAR errors have doubled compared to last season.
- On-field accuracy remains consistent at approximately 86%.

Refereeing errors across the Premier League have escalated this season, with the Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel noting an increase in mistakes. As of the latest reports, 54 errors have been declared, a rise from the 44 recorded at the same point last season. A particular concern is the doubling of VAR errors, which have already matched last season's total, though the overall number of VAR interventions has decreased, suggesting improved on-field decision-making.
While incorrect VAR reviews have seen a slight decrease, there have been more missed VAR interventions and on-field errors season-on-season. Despite these challenges, on-field accuracy, excluding VAR corrections, has held steady at approximately 86% since the 2023-24 campaign. Furthermore, efficiency has improved, with VAR-related delays reduced by 25% over the past three seasons, bringing stoppages down to 48 seconds.
