Pointless Transfers: 2025/26 Premier League Flops
9 Jun
Summary
- Harvey Elliot's loan to Aston Villa resulted in a lost season with limited play.
- Christian Norgaard was a budget signing for Arsenal who saw little game time.
- James Trafford returned to Man City but was soon overshadowed by Donnarumma.

The 2025/26 Premier League season has highlighted several transfer dealings that can only be described as pointless. Harvey Elliot's move to Aston Villa on a loan with an obligation to buy was intended to provide him with minutes and Liverpool with a fee. However, manager Unai Emery did not see him in his long-term plans, leading to minimal game time and a wasted season for the 23-year-old, despite a Europa League medal.
Arsenal's strategy of deepening their squad for a title push included signing Christian Norgaard as a budget midfield addition. However, with Martin Zubimendi also arriving, Norgaard was relegated to the sidelines, making only a handful of league appearances totalling just over 100 minutes.
James Trafford's anticipated first-choice role at Manchester City after his buy-back from Burnley was short-lived. Following early-season games, the club signed Gianluigi Donnarumma, pushing Trafford back to the bench for league matches, although he featured in cup finals.
Burnley's acquisition of Armando Broja for £20m proved fruitless, as the striker managed only one league goal, continuing a trend of underwhelming performances in the top flight. Similarly, Chelsea's loan of Facundo Buonanotte from Brighton was bizarre, with the attacker making just one league appearance before being loaned out again.
