- Powerlifting helped him avoid a 'darker path' in his youth.

Twenty-three-year-old powerlifter Ray Bowring recently made history by successfully squatting 500kg, a feat believed to be the first of its kind for a British athlete in an International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) competition. This incredible lift, equivalent to hoisting a small car, marks a significant milestone in his career.
Bowring, who hails from Gosport in Hampshire, achieved this record at the British Equipped Championships. He also secured a total winning score of 1222.5kg with additional lifts of 350kg in the bench press and 372.5kg in the deadlift. He is now among an elite group worldwide, being one of only two individuals to achieve this weight and the youngest to do so.
He attributes his success to a disciplined routine and the unwavering support of his father, Dean, a former powerlifting champion, and his training partners. Bowring highlighted how powerlifting provided a crucial positive outlet during his teenage years, guiding him away from a potentially negative path.
Having previously completed a sports scholarship in Nebraska, USA, which significantly improved his bench press, Bowring is now focused on further international titles while balancing his training with his NHS day job. He is determined to continue his ascent in the sport.
