Longshot Roars: 67-1 Colt Eyes Santa Anita Derby
9 Mar
Summary
- Potente secured Kentucky Derby points with San Felipe win.
- 67-1 longshot Robusta makes impressive second-place finish.
- So Happy and Secured Freedom may target Santa Anita Derby.

Potente, a $2.4-million colt by Into Mischief, captured the San Felipe Stakes on Saturday, securing a likely spot in the Kentucky Derby with his commanding win. This marked only his second career start and first around two turns, completing the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:42.92 and earning a 90 Beyer Speed Figure. Trainer Bob Baffert indicated Potente would have one more start before the May Kentucky Derby, with the Santa Anita Derby on April 4 being a potential option.
In a significant upset, the 67-1 longshot Robusta finished a close second, just a head behind the winner. His trainer, Doug O'Neill, credited blinkers for the colt's improved performance and confirmed the Santa Anita Derby as his next target. Robusta had previously finished sixth in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes.
