Murf Gray Blasts Off: Pirates Prospect's Power Surge

Pirates' highly-touted third base prospect, Murf Gray, is making a strong case for immediate attention with his dominant play in Single-A Bradenton. He recently earned Florida State League Player of the Week honors for his performance against the Lakeland Tigers from April 28 to May 3. During this period, Gray showcased his offensive prowess, slashing an outstanding .455/.518/.846 with an OPS of 1.364.

Gray's statistics over those games included 10 hits in 22 at-bats, with two doubles, two home runs, eight RBI, and a respectable walk-to-strikeout ratio. He had a particularly stellar outing on April 30, contributing three hits and three RBI to a 13-6 victory. Another highlight was his May 2 performance, where he hit two home runs, recorded four hits, and drove in four runs.

Originally selected 73rd overall in the 2025 MLB Draft out of Fresno State, Gray has quickly made an impact in his first professional season. He was a standout collegiately, earning Mountain West Championship MVP and All-Mountain West Conference First Team honors in 2025. At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, Gray has been a formidable presence for Bradenton, batting .375/.446/.625 with five home runs and 26 RBI in 26 games this season. If his current performance continues, he is expected to earn a promotion to High-A Greensboro.

Gray's current success at the plate, marked by power hitting and consistent extra-base hits, places him among the top hitters in the Florida State League. While his walk rate could improve, his overall offensive game is showing significant promise. The 22-year-old prospect's development is being closely watched by the Pirates organization.
