Summary
- Oscar Piastri sustained front wing damage on the opening lap at Silverstone.
- McLaren's delayed pit stop response dropped Piastri to 21st place.
- Piastri finished 11th, narrowly missing points, while teammate Norris took fourth.
Oscar Piastri's race at Silverstone was effectively ruined following an incident on the opening lap, which caused significant damage to his front wing. The Australian driver made light contact with Liam Lawson's car after the latter had slowed due to a gravel excursion. McLaren's decision to delay Piastri's pit stop call until the end of the second lap saw him drop from eighth to 14th, and subsequently to 21st after the repairs.
Despite the setback, Piastri managed to recover to 11th place by the race's conclusion, narrowly missing out on points. This contrasts with his teammate Lando Norris, who finished fourth. Team principal Andrea Stella acknowledged that Piastri's race was compromised by the lap one incident. He also noted that while the team secured good points, their pure pace placed them as the fourth-fastest car, benefiting from other drivers' misfortunes.
Norris expressed dissatisfaction with the car's grip and downforce, stating that despite achieving a fourth-place finish, the pace was disappointing. McLaren is now focused on improving performance, with major upgrades planned for the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix. The next race in the Formula 1 season is the Belgian Grand Prix on July 19, 2026.
