Suns' Greatest Coach: A True Gentleman on and Off Court

John MacLeod has been overwhelmingly voted the greatest coach in Phoenix Suns history. His legacy extends beyond wins, encompassing a profound sense of sportsmanship and integrity. MacLeod led the Suns to their first NBA Finals appearance in 1976, a historic milestone for the franchise.

With 579 regular-season victories, MacLeod remains the all-time leader in wins for the Suns. His coaching tenure, spanning 14 seasons, also included a playoff record of 37-44 across nine appearances. Former player Alvan Adams vividly remembers MacLeod's emphasis on player respect, recalling an instance where the coach stressed the importance of avoiding on-court embarrassment.

Jerry Colangelo, who lured MacLeod from the University of Oklahoma, recalled an unconventional interview process where MacLeod impressed by speaking to the team before a game. Despite initial hesitation to leave Oklahoma, MacLeod ultimately accepted the Suns' offer, embarking on a legendary coaching career.
