Summary
- Perth Bears targeting Panthers forward Liam Henry for 2027 season
- Henry yet to agree contract extension with Panthers
- Bears also eyeing Canterbury's Luke Smith and North Queensland's Marly Bitungane

As the Perth Bears prepare for their inaugural 2027 season, the expansion team is aggressively pursuing top talent to bolster their roster. One of their key targets is Panthers forward Liam Henry, a premiership-winning player with significant untapped potential.
According to reports, the Bears have identified Henry as a priority signing and plan to offer him a lucrative deal. However, the player is yet to reach an agreement with the Panthers over a contract extension, leaving the door open for the expansion club.
In addition to Henry, the Bears are also eyeing Canterbury Bulldogs forward Luke Smith and former North Queensland Cowboys player Marly Bitungane, both of whom are without contracts for the 2026 season. The pair are expected to play next year under Jason Demetriou at the London Broncos before returning to be part of the Perth Bears' inaugural team.
The Bears, led by former Penrith assistant Ben Gardiner, who is set to succeed head coach Mal Meninga in 2029, are aiming to sign 10 players by the Christmas period. Reports indicate the club has been highly aggressive in its recruitment efforts since November 1.
